Why Should I Invest?

Longevity of Vision - The decisions we make today and tomorrow based on the research we are able to fund and support for the working lands of Maryland will determine what sort of Maryland we leave to our children and grandchildren.

Reputation - The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology has a reputation of basing management recommendations, policy suggestions, and education and outreach efforts on good science.

Track Record - In its five years of existence, the Center has influenced the way in which cover crops are used to improve water quality from farms to the Bay; has funded research in new uses for traditional crops such as barley for ethanol production being used by the Maryland Grain Producers to locate and build a prototype plant; has researched the need for new programs and policies to sustain the forest industry in Maryland, some of which have been supported by the Administration; and has funded research focusing on land use tools to preserve farms and forests at the county level which tools have been implemented by several counties (e.g. transfer of development rights, purchase of development rights, and downzoning).

Problem Solving - The Center has been a focal point for bringing together environmental, farming, and forestry interests to resolve differences among the groups as to how to deal with the impact of farming on the Bay and its resources.

Helping Our Young Scholars - The Harry R. Hughes Endowed Fellowship would enable our young people to continue to learn while applying their expertise to problem solving that will be of benefit to the citizens of Maryland.
