For the past several years, the Center has been fortunate to receive earmarks through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service budget to fund applied research projects. These dollars have remained in the budget through the dedication and support of Maryland's Senators and Representatives. The Center has also been generously provided with operating dollars from the University of Maryland. The Board of Directors wants the Center to expand so that it can continue to make a difference by facing the challenges to Maryland's farms and forests through its research and to remain at the cutting edge. The availability of research and operating dollars is always subject to policy shifts and competition.
It is essential to provide for the future of Maryland's working lands by offering applied research opportunities to new generations of scholars and graduate students who will be able to tackle tough issues affecting the working lands in Maryland and who will take the results and work with key stakeholder groups to implement findings that will make a difference.
To honor former Governor Harry R. Hughes and all that he has and continues to stand for - the betterment of the State of Maryland.
