What is the Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology?

The Center is a public, non-affiliated 501 (c) (3) organization with facilities and operating dollars provided by the University of Maryland. Founded in 1999, the Center brings together diverse interests from the agricultural, forestry and environmental communities for the purpose of retaining Maryland’s working landscapes and the industries they support while protecting and improving the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

The Harry R. Hughes Endowed Fellowship Fund was created to enable exceptional scholars and graduate students to research key issues essential to the economic viability and environmental sustainability of agriculture and forestry in Maryland. The goal is to offer the next generation of leaders the opportunity to conduct original research in a University setting and to gain valuable “real world” experience in how to apply the Center model of bringing together diverse interests from the agricultural, forestry, and environmental communities to identify and implement mutually beneficial solutions to common problems.
